The Ornithologist (15)

João Pedro Rodrigues | 2016 | Portugal | France | Brazil | 113’

Deliciously subversive and genuinely funny, this is a delightfully meandering, playfully queer riff on the St. Anthony of Padua legend that uses the classic man on a journey of self-discovery motif. Fernando, a solitary ornithologist, is looking for black storks when he is swept away by the rapids. Rescued by a couple of Chinese pilgrims, he plunges into an eerie and dark forest, trying to get back on his track. Is this a big sexy joke or an earnest, religious and intellectual inquiry into the boundaries of spiritual and physical adventure?
