Martin Scorsese, Italy / Mexico / Japan / USA, 2016, 159’
A new Martin Scorsese film is always something to look forward to, but when it comes to Silence, a passion project of Scorsese’s which he has been fighting to make for over three decades, it’s understandable that our hopes are rather high. Starring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver as two young 17th-century Jesuit priests who travel to Japan to investigate claims of religious persecution and whether or not their mentor (Liam Neeson) has broken from the church. Meditative and brutal simultaneously.
