ROH: Don Pasquale

Royal Opera favourite Bryn Terfel heads the cast for this new production of Donizetti’s comedy of domestic drama across two generations. The witty story of a middle-aged man whose supposed young wife runs rings around him–with her own ulterior romantic purpose in mind–has long delighted and surprised audiences, not least as presented with the sparkle of its music and the virtuoso skill of its performers. Damiano Michieletto’s exhilarating production shows how contemporary the characters still are and how immediate and touching the story remains.

Professional musician, teacher and opera enthusiast Idris Rees will be bringing back pre- show talks around the new Opera seasons and has this to say about what's in store...

" “Don Pasquale” provides much needed light relief.  Opera buffa, comic opera, following the traditions of the Italian Commedia del Arte - street opera that ordinary people enjoyed, but now written for the opera house. The Don himself who is the buffoon of the piece is sung by no less than our own Bryn Terfel -  not the hero in this story but the silly old man who is lead a merry dance by the two young lovers. [Love yet again]"

"If you have never been to an opera before in your life come and see “Don Pasquale” don’t be put off by the foreign title it just means Mr Pasquale, he could be a lord but in the context of this opera it doesn’t matter. The story, the opera, is very closely related to Punch and Judy and depending on the production has a lot of room for a bit of slapstick in it. Come half an hour early and have a chat with me. You will enjoy."

Pre-show talk in the art gallery space at 7pm.
