Jia Zhangke | China | France | Japan | 2018 | 135’

A complex romantic tragedy from Jia Zhang-ke with a three- part structure. Opening in 2001, just as China is starting to embrace capitalism, against the backdrop of a depressed coal-mining town in which Qiao (Tao Zhao) is involved with a local gangster. Later Qiao is taken away, and then returned a number of years later to a China she barely recognises.

Everyone and everything she knew has moved on and she tries to make sense of what her future holds, spurred on initially by a need to avenge her misfortune.
