Cardigan Theatre: Steel Magnolias

A play by Robert Harling

An amateur production by arrangement with Samuel French

Chinquapin is a Deep South small town America in the heart of Louisiana, where everyone knows everyone else in an easy-going but definitely matriarchal society. Truvy’s Beauty Shop is the centre of the spider’s web that is the ladies’ network – everything that happens in the town is subject to scrutiny within these four walls. The story follows the interactions between six acquainted but very different women as a complex trail of relationships unfolds. The play is a beautifully written, witty and insightful view of this town within a journey of incredibly nuanced highs and lows. A movie version appeared in 1989, starring Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine and an early casting of Julia Roberts.
