Ym mis Mehefin eleni, rhyddhaodd Sam, sy’n ganwr gwerin a gafodd ei enwebu ar gyfer Gwobr Mercury, yn gasglwr caneuon, hyrwyddwr (o Nest Collective y BBC), cyflwynydd radio, personoliaeth teledu, athro ac animateur, ei albwm cyntaf “Ground Of Its Own”, sy’n cynnwys caneuon a ddysgwyd yn wreiddiol o’r gymuned Sipsiwn teithiol.

Yn enillydd Gwobr Sefydliad y Celfyddydau, mae’n gyflym cael ei dderbyn fel arloeswr newydd, gan ddiffinio sain a gwead canu gwerin heddiw. Yn yr un modd mae ‘Sam Lee & Friends’ yn perfformio dehongliadau anghonfensiynol a chyfoes sy’n herio pob rhagdybiaeth o’r hyn y dylai ‘canu gwerin draddodiadol’ swnio fel.

“An album of unusual dignity and immense beauty.” MOJO

“This is a perfectly executed attempt to modernise staple motifs with originality.” The Guardian

“The album has a gentle, insistent power.” The Observer

“This is not the folksy "musing" beloved of neo-hippies nor the rigid threnody of a world-wearied traditionalist. Rather, Lee is interested in the way old oral texts can be teased into new life with unexpected instrumental textures and arrangements. A further good sign, should you need one, is the production involvement of John Wood.”  Independent on Sunday

“Sam’s baritone voice is a complete and utter joy to listen to.” brightyoungfolk.com

“Sam Lee is a shining and original talent on the British folk scene.” Evening Standard, 5/5

“Lee's voice, oddly blithe and light for a baritone, captures the mythic charm of these songs and it's arrangements, at once vivid yet shrouded, set Ground of Its Own apart.” The Independent

“Ground of Its Own is a very likeable debut. Lee knows these songs are wind-whipped survivors and he meets their fearless spirit with plenty of innovation and the greatest of respect. His interpretations can stand proudly within these songs’ long histories.” bbc.co.uk

“Live or on record, Sam Lee and his band present rich tapestries of ancient songs in an innovative and dynamic fashion.” -folking.wordpress.com
